JANUARY 2009

Check our Winter Guide to Provincetown

January 1, Thursday - New Year's Day

10, 1:00 pm Metropolitan Opera Broadcast @ WHAT 508-349- 9428 www.what.org, Live Broadcast: La Rondine (New Production) - Puccini

13, 7pm The thirteenth annual Winter Reading Series of the New Provincetown Players will begin at 7 pm next Tuesday, January 13, at the Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford Street.

First play of the series is Two Rooms, by Lee Blessing, directed by Jeff Spenser and starring Judith Partelow, Christy Morris, Henry Morlock, and Jeff Spenser.

The two rooms of the title are a windowless cubicle in Beirut where an American hostage is being held by terrorists, and a room in his home in the United States that his wife has stripped of furniture so that at least symbolically she can share his ordeal. A single setting serves as both the locale for imaginary conversations between the hostage and his wife, as well as for her encounters with a reporter and a State Department official.

The popular series, which customarily has been on Wednesday evenings, has been moved to Tuesday to accommodate other theater scheduling needs. Planned for the balance of the season are nine more plays:

January 20 Shell Shock, by Eugene O'neil, directed by Deborah Peabody
January 27 Closure 6 by James McLindon, directed by Patrick Falco
February 3 Eucatastrophe, by Andy Reynolds, directed by Andy Reynolds
February 10 An Evening with Daniel Cleary
February 17 Big Bro/Little Bro by Jonathan Ciniceroz directed by Patrick Falco
February 24 The Tides at Herring Cove Beach, by Roger Chauvette, directed by Roger Chauvette
March 3 First Love, by Charles Mee, directed by Bob Seaver

20, 7pm LOST O'NEIL PLAYS TO BE READ AT PROVINCETOWN THEATER. Theater buffs will be given a rare opportunity to hear a reading of two of Eugene O'Neil's early plays, "Shell-Shock" and "The Sniper" at the Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford Street, at 7 pm on Tuesday, January 20th. "Shell-shock" is O'Neil's century-old take on today's malady du jour, post-traumatic stress disorder, setting a bloody description of life and death under bombardment at Chateau-Thierry against the quiet calm of a Manhattan university club. It features Brian Carlson as a heroic infantry officer, Tom Wolfson as the man he rescued under withering enemy fire, Griff Griffeths as a medical officer, and Phoebe Otis on stage directions. "The Sniper", a snapshot of life under German attack and occupation, feature Tom Wolfson as a Belgian peasant farmer who has lost much under hostile shelling, and learns in the course of the play how much more he has lost; Brian Carlson as the village priest who consoles him; Griff Griffeths as a German infantry captain who spells out the draconian rules of engagement, Sumner Phillips as a peasant boy, and Phoebe Otis again on stage directions. The reading is part of the New Provincetown Players' Winter Reading Series, and is directed by Deborah Peabody, who resurrected the plays from a collection, all written before O'Neil's triumphant Broadway debut in 1930, and published in 1950, as "10 Lost Plays of Eugene O'Neil", most of which have not been performed until now, and all of whose copyrights had been allowed to lapse.
