Provincetown People: Jan Freeman

from Happiness

When the fish jump into the air
does the red-haired woman think of me
or has she toppled into the sand of a distant state?
The dune grass, emerald
fishing boats, black frozen coils
wait for summer to lift
Fragrance surveys the beach
and leaves its own tracks in the sand
like the white dog running beneath the swallow's tease
Scent fills the air with impermanent greeting
salt, fish, roses, light
And there is the first seal of the day
looking at me as I look at her
the dark edges of her body
and the waves
hello hello happiness!
