In 1945, Charlie Couper and I drove to Provincetown to study with Henry Hensche, a pupil of Charles Hawthorne. In those days, there was no highway, so, after five hours of driving, we arrived in the Truro hills and saw for the first time the profile of Provincetown. I said to Charlie: "That's where I'm going to live my life." I was seventeen. After so many years, I am beginning to understand the subtle curves and characteristics of this unusual landscape, and I still find it challenging and rewarding. My work is Provincetown to me. I hope and pray that we will always retain the mix that a working town offers a creative person.
